Five Affordable Fall/Winter Skincare Tips

Autumn/winter months have a beauty of their own. Some of my favorite things about the season and winter are hot drinks, fresh bread, and books! As we navigate the colder temperatures, we find our hard-earned summer glow steadily slipping away. Just because sun-kissed skin season is long gone, it doesn’t mean we can’t maintain a glow year round. Here are some tips to show your skin some TLC as we head into cooler temperatures.

1. Consider adding cold pressed sesame oil to your skincare routine. An ancient Indian remedy for environmental wear on skin and hair is the use of oil. Massaged into the skin, it can soothe winter-worn skin. I find organic, cold pressed sesame oil works well for my skin type and use it almost daily during the colder months. Other oils to consider are coconut oil and sunflower oil.

2. Use a face mask weekly. There are plenty of ready to use masks out there, but I find there is something beautiful and incredibly relaxing about the ritual of making and applying your own face mask. I like to apply a mix of good quality honey and fresh-squeezed lemon juice to my face for 10 minutes. Wash it off with warm water. Lemon contains citric acid, which can eliminate dead skin cells, and give the skin a shiny appearance. Additional benefit – its a nice way to give yourself some much needed TLC.

3. Drink plenty of water. I don’t know what the recommended daily water intake is, the answers differ depending on who you ask, but I aim for 8-10 glasses per day to flush out toxins and keep my skin happy!

4. Eat in color. Try to incorporate a variety of colorful fruit and veggies into your diet.

5. Rest. Aim to incorporate pockets of rest into your week, whatever that looks like for you. It could be a quick nap, designated time for prayer, a phone-free time block, consistent bedtime and wake times, or just embracing a slower pace for your soul to catch up with your body.

So as you buckle down for the winter months, think about your adjusting your skincare routine but more importantly, identify ways in which you can be kinder to yourself, inside and out!
